Wednesday, April 27th, 11:30pm: 30 minutes before registration closes for Promise Land. Aaron had long ago passed out in bed. He was exhausted. He’d been exhausted for months. My fingers hovered over the keyboard in indecision.
Reasons for running the Promise Land 50k:
(a) I need to get some quality mountains training in during the next couple weeks if I want a prayer of finishing the Laurel Highland 70 mile race in June.
(b) Our friend PJ had kindly offered to give me a ride to Promise Land. Easy peasy.
(c) Aaron had declined my initial suggestion to head out to Canaan Valley this weekend. I was tempted to whine my way to West Virginia. I’m a good whiner. After all, we hadn’t been to Canaan since February. And Thursday was my 35th birthday. Usually this would be all the extra ammunition I’d need. But Aaron saying no to a trip to his beloved Canaan Valley only means one thing: Aaron is about a 9.5 on a 10-point work stress richter scale. Whining under such circumstances is only likely to backfire. When Aaron is in work stress mode, the best thing is to back off and give him space.
Reasons for not running the Promise Land 50k:
(a) The closest I’ve gotten to doing any kind of climbing in the mountains the last few months was riding the chairlift in Colorado last week. Promise Land is one of the most mountainous 50ks around. When Keith K. raves about a race, you know you’ d better have your hill legs.
(b) There weren’t many people I knew running PL this year. No Wussies. No Andrish clan. The main point of running these races is getting to hang out with friends.
(c) Do I really need any other reasons than being utterly ill-prepared and having no friends?
(d) Okay, there were a few more bonus reasons to skip out. I came to realize that PJ was driving down to the race with his girlfriend. Being third-wheel is no-win. Either the couple is having a grand ole time and you feel even worse that your boyfriend chose work over you on your birthday weekend. Or, even worse, the couple is fighting the whole time and you wish you could shrivel to pea-size and disappear.
(e) One more bonus reason: PJ’s plan was to camp in the parking lot, something that is very popular among PL runners but which Aaron and I have never done. We have a strong preference for dry shelter.
As all these competing reasons spun in my head, I could see Aaron’s white feet sticking out beneath the blankets. And I knew that tomorrow, my 35th birthday, was going to be a gloom-fest. And that come Saturday I’d better be out there in the mountains. I whipped out my credit card and sealed the deal.
In fairness, I’d already had a full ‘birth-month’ of celebrations. First there was the Race for the Birds and LobsterFest in early April, followed by our ski trip to Colorado (https://vimeo.com/163051026), then my brother’s family visiting from Vermont, and culminating with Tuesday’s boisterous Birthday-Wedding WUS. For bloody sake, I’d already had THREE birthday cakes. So by the time my actual birth date rolled around on April 28th, even my cat was ready to be done with the overkill of birth-month. But I was unprepared for the extent of Aaron’s commitment to ‘non-birthday’. I went to work in a dark hoodie and refused to crack a smile until intern Bobby face-planted into a mud puddle (Bobby also face-planted at the donut run; apparently for Bobby this is a thing).
As Aaron and I pulled the tent down from the closet, I realized I hadn’t been camping since the pre-Aaron era, at Holy Cowan’s Gap, a time when I was single, in my 20s, and did a a lot of things solo. With Aaron’s work life kicking into high gear, it was time for me to re-discover that 20-something who can decide to do a race on a Wednesday, learn how to put the tent together on Thursday, and climb into the back of a friend’s car on Friday, and just enjoy the thrill of getting out of the house.

‘I bet if I try to hang with you, it will push me into running at least 10 minutes faster.’
I liked the idea of having PJ to run with, he’s easy to talk with, but I didn’t want there to be any misconceptions about the nature of the run. ‘PJ, I’m probably going to run in 6 hours or so. This is just my kick-off training run for Laurel. I haven’t been running mountains. I’m not in race mode. And Promise Land is the kind of race to soak it all in — it’s beautiful — and there’s plenty of opportunity to wipe yourself out on Apple Orchard Falls at the end if you’re feeling good. ‘
PJ was unconvinced. ‘I couldn’t even hang with you guys at WUS.’
‘Seven miles ain’t 30 miles.’

It was impossible to find PJ at the start line in the pitch dark, but we connected on the first long climb up the road. For about 10 minutes, when PJ realized that all my chatter about taking it easy was entirely for real, he found my pace to be lacking and ran sections I walked. I’d come across him many miles later just before the big Falls climb, and I’d finish only a couple minutes ahead of him. I couldn’t help but feel that if he’d have been a little patient and just stuck with me, we could have had a jolly good time running together the whole way and he would have had the same net result. But PJ did his first 50k just last fall and is in full-on ultra trail running honeymoon stage. They can’t help themselves.
I had gagged/force-fed my bit of breakfast, and while my legs were surprisingly fine, my stomach was bad early on. I vomited during the second major climb, before even getting to mile 10. I’ve devoted plenty of blog-space in the past to my endlessly frustrating stomach issues in ultras, and I’m not going to discuss them any further here. Frankly, stomach, I’m just tired of you.
Fortunately, I didn’t feel like my stomach was totally tearing down my run. I’d walked a little, and maybe my prophylactic immodium helped. But my mood started to sour when after the third aid station we set out on what should have been, had it not been for my stomach, a glorious downhill stretch, which I remember vividly from when I ran PL in 2013 as the kind of section that makes you fall in love with running again.
‘How are you doing?’ a young guy asked as he passed me.
I made no effort to sugar-coat my mood or my stomach problems.
‘What’s your name?’
‘Martha.’
‘Okay, Martha, I’m going to say a prayer to Jesus for you.’
That wasn’t exactly a direction I’d been prepared for the conversation to go. ‘Oh, no, that’s not really necessary.’ I was certain that even if Jesus could hear us, he had orphans to feed and plagues to offset and my little stomach couldn’t plausibly crack even the top million of worthy pleas around the world. But even if the Liberty University culture feels as distant from my DC life as Calcutta, I recognized that the gesture was genuine and from a place of kindness. And at least it got Parker Millsap’s killer tune ‘Truck Stop Gospel’ stuck in my head for a couple miles. And as I rolled along down the switchbacks, I started to find my downhill groove. By the middle of the descent I was having to ask a lot of guys if they could please let me by. Finding your downhill running groove makes my top-5 list of The Ultimate Best Things in the World, nudging out both Belgian chocolate and farts. So this was no small matter. A handful of synapses began to consider whether Jesus had actually heard the prayer.
Horton was at the aid station at the bottom of the climb. Seeing Horton always gives me a twinge of guilt. I know that, above all else, Horton wants to see folks ripping up the trails. When I first started running with WUS, Keith and Sean prophesied that I’d be a great ultra runner. Every race we talked about, whether it was Bull Run or Holiday Lake, the common refrain was, ‘You’ll totally set a course record there.’ Eight years later, you have to wonder what they got wrong. It’s not just my stomach. It’s more fundamental. They both made a (really rather reasonable) assumption that a woman running sub-3 marathons knows how to train. How to structure training weeks that combine long runs and intensity with proper rest periods, etc. etc. I don’t think it ever occurred to them that I didn’t own a watch, and that my marathon preparation consisted solely of haphazard 4-7 trots on dirt paths looking for birds and gossiping, with some kind of long-ish run over 12 miles tossed in just to say I’d ‘trained’. But I’ve found that while genetics and sheer will power are enough to gut it out on the roads, not being trained is punishing in tough mountainous ultra races like Promise Land or Manitou’s. You don’t train, you don’t win.
I am not a naturally structured person. I don’t write outlines before I write my manuscripts. I’m not very tidy. Okay, at Aaron’s insistence I will correct that sentence: I am not tidy at all. I entirely lack the compulsiveness and propensity for structure and record-keeping that is required for training. I tried to wear a watch. That failed. I probably shouldn’t feel guilty when I see Horton. It’s not like I’m a quitter or a litterer or violator of some code of the trail. I’m a perfectly nice little trail runner and he probably just feels bad for me that I get sick at all his races, with no inkling of the gap between my actual and theoretical performance.
I ended up finishing the race with my new Jesus friend, Weston. Around mile 25ish I caught up to a large peloton of dudes all running in a line that included he and PJ. Karma comes around, and I ditched PJ and stuck with Weston. He and I made it together through the rough, never-ending finish of the Apple Orchard Falls climb. And stuck together down the final road descent. My quads were absolutely trashed. But running slower didn’t make them feel any better, and he clocked us at 6:15 pace down the last miles. He was trying to calculate whether we could finish in under 6 hours, which was his goal. So I thought I was doing him a favor pushing him a little. When I realized he was hurting more than I, and got clarification that there wasn’t actually any chance of breaking 6, we eased up a bit. I was just hoping to be top-ten to get the awesome Horton swag. And I thought there was something very fitting about finishing with the guy who’d prayed for my belly at mile 10. My stomach was by no means perfect, but it never took the run-destroying nosedive. A coincidence or not, that I didn’t puke once post-prayer?
The swag was, as predicted, awesome. I will probably live in my new Patagonia hoodie sweatshirt, at least until DC summer temps hit. PJ finished a little bit later. I gave him a little bit of shit for ditching me. It’s okay, though, he’s still finding that fine line between running comfortably and racing. But he was jetting off for what sounded like an impossibly awesome boys rafting trip in Southern Utah. How come no one ever invites me on boys rafting trips in Southern Utah? I ended up hitching a ride with a guy named Luke, who was heading back to Vienna.
‘You know, I didn’t really achieve either of my goals today,’ I admitted to PJ after the race as we tried to smush the muddy, wet tent gear into bags that now seemed way too small. ‘I didn’t run fast and I didn’t spare my legs.’
PJ laughed.
‘But I sure did boot and rally.’ I paused. ‘Boot and rally — isn’t that something from college where you drink so much you puke, and then keep drinking?’ I strained to imagine what could possess a girl to keep drinking after barfing. ‘I never did that. But hey, at this ole age of 35, I guess it’s never to late to learn. Thanks, Jesus.’
While most of the VHTRC was running Bull Run Run 50 or North Face 50mi/50k/marathon/half marathon on April 9th, a small renegade faction was in Shepherdstown, WV for what could be the most under-rated trail race in the area: Race for the Birds 5k/10k.

Race for the Birds has all the elements of what we love about trail racing: beautiful challenging course, great people, informal/low cost/easy logistics, great cause (Potomac Valley Audubon Society). It also happened to have kick-ass photographers from the Antietam Photographic Society [Aaron’s leading this pack here in green (379), I’m a bit obscured behind in blue (369), and Cecily’s is easy to spot in bright pink in the center (403)]

Heredity is a curious thing. At a very young age I started finding four-leaf clovers. Hundreds of them. On the playing field, in the back yard, between at-bats. From March to November, it was open season on clovers. Strangely enough, this little quirk of mine turned out to be another resemblance with my Finnish namesakes. My paternal grandmother Irene and paternal great-grandmother Martha were both avid cooks, and the pages of their cookbooks were filled with the dried four-leaf clovers they had collected over the years.
For me, every March is a trial in patience. All around me, spring seems to be kicking off. There’s the equinox, the end of daylight savings time, cherry blossoms, opening day pitches. But I grow restless as the March days spike from the balmy 70s to the frigid 30s, and my spring doesn’t officially begin until I spot the year’s first four-leaf clover. After what seemed like an agonizingly long wait this March, spring finally sprung on Saturday, March 26th. Aaron and I were taking a little post-run stroll in the Tregaron conservancy across the street when I found four little four-leafers on the grassy hill.
I had put concerted effort earlier that week into organizing the morning’s fun little group run with Keith and Trevor. Aaron and I hadn’t run with Keith in an awfully long time, and the previous week had been an epic failure in trying to herd cats, but sometimes you just have to put your head down and steamroll through the inertia. More than anything else I do — publishing papers, winning races — I tend to feel like the world smiles brightest when I take the effort to herd cats, whether it’s for SnowShoeFest, or LobsterFest, or just a simple little group run. So I considered it no coincidence that I found my first clover of the year on the very same morning that I organized the best group run since Birthday Hats.
After a long dormant winter, the clover is like a defibrillator that gets my heart thumping again. The clover is not just a mark of spring bursting through the earth, quite literally. I feel the lines of generations of ancestors coursing through my veins. Ancestors who persevered through dark and trying times — war and illness and loss — with grace and grit. Martha Palonen lived to be 100, surviving her solo trip from Finland to Ellis Island at age 16, the 1918 Spanish flu (which infected her), the death of her husband (the Finnish miler who died of tuberculosis), and being a single mother during the Great Depression. Our current world can seem so dark at times, so steeped in suffering and willful ignorance and what can only be understood as pure evil. But every time I pluck a clover, I remember the implacable cheer in Irene’s twinkly blue eyes, a constant counterweight to her curmudgeonly husband. And the way I watched as a child with wide eyes as my great-grandmother Martha’s 80-year old biceps would pound ten-pound balls of dough into submission, making the world’s best chocolate chip cookies, brushing aside dried clovers from the pages of her cookbooks. Gazing at the little clover, happiness seems stupidly clear.
‘I hardly ever say this,’ said the veterinarian at City Paws matter-of-factly, ‘but your cat is the perfect weight.’
I beamed.
Two years ago my cat Leda (aka ‘Little Boo’) and I had embarked on a joint mission. Little Boo had been chronically overfed and needed to shed some pounds. My breaking point was when my Dad commented that she was looking a little chunky. Aaron suggested that I initiate a strict regimen of 1/4 cup of dry food 2x a day, with a treat at night. At first it broke my heart to hear her crying for food and not be able to give her any. But apparently truly loving your animal means not overstuffing it with food until it dies of heart failure. I held my ground and stuck to the plan, and set a goal weight of 10 little kitty pounds.
Working on getting Little Boo to attain an ideal weight got me thinking about myself. I decided that if poor Little Boo was going to suffer to achieve her goal weight, I should strive to achieve mine. I hunkered down and developed my own strategy for getting to 120+ lbs from a low of around 116. I researched and figured out which foods were the biggest bang for buck calorie-wise. I started adding nuts, seeds, and cheese to everything. I ate avocados and hard-boiled eggs like candy. I switched to whole milk. I added Ovaltine to my whole milk. I picked up pieces of Vace pizza in the morning and brought them to work for lunch. In June 2014 I officially launched Operation Littler Boo and Operation More Marmot.
This might sound like some kind of food paradise (think Templeton the rat warbling ‘A Fair is a Veritable Schmorgasboard-orgasboard-orgasboard’ in the 1973 Charlotte’s Web animated movie). But shoving food down when you’re not hungry isn’t as fun as it sounds. It’s kind of like being a kid again and having your mom make you finish your vegetables. Because I didn’t want to just make up the calories in junk food. Sure, dark chocolate in the morning and ice cream every night was a mainstay. And no food was altogether forbidden. But a lot of my strategy was learning which foods with nutritional value I could eat even when I was feeling pretty full (avocados, almonds, and hard-boiled eggs are big winners here). Gaining weight the right way takes a lot of planning and being systematic, two things that do not come naturally to Marmots.
Last week Little Boo weighed in at City Paws at 10.3 lbs. She crushed it. I’ve been consistently weighing in at around 125. Crushed it, and then some. Little Boo and I are in the bathtub right now clinking our champagne glasses. And then chasing it with some hard-boiled eggs.
DC Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon

1. Where is Keith?
The DC marathon has changed a lot over the years. Five years ago it was taken over by the Rock ‘n’ Roll franchise, introducing bands and music along the course. Then they switched the start from RFK to the Mall. And over this time it’s surged from a couple hundred marathoners to now 25,000+ runners that bring traffic in the city to its knees. But the one permanent fixture over the years was Keith. Somehow I always ran into Keith at the starting line, where he would roll his head in ornery resignation, wondering what forces had again conspired to bring him to that same spot of concrete every year. So even though the starting line of the 2016 DC Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon was crammed with thousands of runners, something was clearly missing. No Keith.
Fortunately Aaron and I were able to track down some of our other favorite WUSsies. Robin hadn’t been able to resist Catawba the week prior, and was smartly settling for the half. And newbie WUS Trevor was out to avenge his shave-over-3 hour previous marathon performance. I didn’t really have an explicit goal for the race. I have a knack for getting under 3 no matter what the circumstances (I haven’t had a marathon race float over 3 hours in over a decade). But a never-winning combination of several weeks of weird insomnia and squeezing in some long runs late and not getting in a quality taper was surely going to put that knack to the test. I hadn’t done any road run in the double digits. Come to think of it, I’d only done one road run total in the last month. Without any real goals for myself, I figured my best bet was to run with Trevor. Maybe if we teamed up we could both scoot under 3 hours.
2. Trevor, will you run all my marathons with me?
I like to run with people. I’ve written previously about the differences in my and Aaron’s approaches to social running. The whole idea of running being a quiet time to self-reflect and be peaceful doesn’t resonate with me at all. I have a plump lazy kitty and a view of some nice oaks for that. If I’m going to haul myself out the door I want to have some fun. I want people to tell funny stories. Or at least laugh at mine. Isn’t that the entire point of being a distance runner? So that we can run at a pace where we can still chatter? Maybe I’m one of those obnoxious runners who won’t shut up.

In the first mile I started chatting with some guy who’d never run the DC marathon before and was under the impression that it was fast. Are you familiar with the Calvert hill? What about the Fort Dupont hill at mile 22? I cleared things up for him. Then Robin sidled up next to us and the fun began. Robin and I are planning to rally the other female VHTRCers who are running Boston this year to form an Open Womens team. There’s a bunch of us — me, Robin, Amanda, Grace. We’d be a real solid team, all running around 3 hours, and could possibly be top-3.
I have a very strong sense of marathon pace. I wore a GPS watch just to collect data, but I didn’t look at it once. I sensed that running with Robin was making me run just a touch faster than I should, and let her go ahead. But running alone, my head quickly found the gutter. I realized my calves were tired from not getting a good taper. My quads were weak from not doing any long road runs. My hip wasn’t really firing right and my left foot was doing the flippy thing to compensate. I was exhausted and cranky from having such a rough time sleeping the past few weeks (I had never had such severe insomnia in my life; I’m still not sure what caused it). Just when I was starting to snivel about why I’d toed the line at all, Trevor swooped up to my side and sent the demons splitting.
The first half of the marathon course is a rollicking good time. It’s the prettiest part of the course, heading up Rock Creek Park and through Woodley Park and Adam’s Morgan. The marathoners and half-marathoners run together, so the pack is thick and the streets lined with spectators. Cecily and Ben on the Calvert Street hill with their big sign they’d made for me was a highlight of the day. Robin’s husband Adam made a surprise appearance on Columbia Road. And Trevor’s friends were on North Capital Street. There were even three police ponies on the Taft Bridge. It’s tough not to get caught up in the momentum of the first half, when the sights are good, the energy is high, and the half marathoners are blazing to their earlier finish. I had to keep reminding Trevor to rein it in. Our race doesn’t end at mile 13.
From that point on, Trevor and I pretty much ran the rest of the race together. I still had low points where various things hurt — calves and hips and hamstrings — but running with Trevor it was easy to stay positive and mission-focused. Trevor also got to know what it’s like to run as a girl and hear shouts of ‘Girl Power!’ and ‘You Go Girl!’ for three hours.
3. You wouldn’t like me when I’m caffeinated.
My nutrition plan for marathons is pretty simple: 1 gel at mile 8, 1 gel at mile 15, and 1 gel at mile 21. Drink every two miles, sometimes water, sometime gatorade, with some leeway. But I found myself unusually hungry and devoured a gel at mile 6, and another at mile 10. The salted watermelon GU was a big winner. I’d taken a half an immodium before the race prophylactically, and my stomach seemed to be holding strong. Fortunately, at mile 12 Robin was almost done with her half marathon and had a gel to spare, and she kindly donated it. It had a little bit of caffeine, and I warned Trevor that he wouldn’t like me when I’m caffeinated. But I desperately needed it at mile 16. Trevor clarified that he would very much like me when I’m caffeinated, only just for a very short period.
The race was handing out some kind of gel with an unfamiliar brand around mile 18. It was called Glukose or something. Now, I’m not saying that Glukose is a bad energy gel per se. But it’s frightening to try something new for the first time on race day. But by mile 20 I needed something besides gatorade and lobbed it down. It was really sweet and watery, unlike any gel I’d ever had. Its wateriness made it go down easy. But I wished they’d just given us something familiar.
I’ve learned that as the marathon goes on, it takes a lot more energy to slow down for the drink stations. By the time I hit mile 20 I pretty much make a deal with myself that if I get one more GU down, everything else from that point on is optional. At that point, hopefully I’ve banked enough hydration and food to get me through. When your legs are that tired, slowing down in the stations just makes it that much harder to get back up to speed again.
4. Are you the leader bikes?
When Trevor and I split from the half marathoners around mile 12 the field thinned considerably and we were pretty much on our own. I noticed that two official-looking people on bikes shot out onto the street ahead of us and seemed to be looking over their shoulder at us regularly. With the half marathoners gone and the bikes ahead, I remembered that this was actually a race and wondered what place I was in. Were those bikes for me? I yelled ahead at the bikes to try to figure out what they were doing (maybe they were 3-hour pace bikes?), but they were too far ahead.
Normally the leader bike is my best friend. Running alone, the leader bike gives me someone to talk to. Sometimes it’s a guy on a bicycle, sometimes a guy on a motorcycle, but they always stay close to me, cooling my nerves, and giving me information about how far ahead or behind other female runners are. At the Charlottesville Marathon I pawned some snacks off the lead motorcycle. At the St Paul marathon the lead bicycle became my number 1 fan, urging me on in the final miles of a sweltering hot day.
But these were the most useless leader bikes I’d ever encountered. They rode 100 yards ahead, out of ear shot. I couldn’t even figure out if they were for me. Finally I enlisted the help of a random biker on the street to shoot ahead and figure out their deal. The kind biker came back to tell me that they were both leader bikes for the second place female, who was apparently me. I was so distracted by the issue about the leader bikes that I didn’t even notice what we went through the half in, but apparently it was just a shade over 1:30.
5. The ugliest section of the course has no redeeming features except getting to see Bear
Miles 15-17 make you want to die. It’s a low point mentally anyway, as your legs are starting to feel fatigued but you still have 10+ miles to go. And the marathon takes you in this stupid out-and-back 2-mile hairpin through the ugliest part of the city along the southern peninsula. The first place woman was about 4 minutes ahead of me in this section, looking like she had the race in her pocket. But at least Trevor and I got to see Aaron, who always seems impossibly joyous. Apparently Aaron was greatly relieved to see me running with Trevor. I was his problem now.
6. The only thing worse than the out-and-back is the grated bridge.
This sucks! To add insult to injury, when you finally get out of the mile 15-17 box you have to run across a bridge with painful grates. I recall from the New York City marathon that they put nice soft carpeting over the bridges between the city’s five burroughs, sparing our poor runner feet from the damage of pointy metal spikes. But with the DC Rock ‘n’ Roll you get the feeling that after the half marathon the entire race organization just stops caring.
7. The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner
When you finally survive the pointy bridge surface, you find yourself in the loneliest part of the course going through Anacostia Park. I found myself repeatedly turning my head to the left to peer at the cityscape across the river, because what’s ahead was just a wasteland of emptiness. The half marathoners were seeming awfully smart at this point. When I asked Trevor after the race if there was any point when he had doubts about whether he would break 3 hours, he immediately thought of this gloomy stretch. But I had done a little math and knew that Trevor and I could not slacken our pace if we wanted to slip under 3 hours. Trevor admits that I pushed him a bit in this section, and we started passing other runners.
8. In the bag
Trevor and I had stopped chatting miles ago. But from time to time we mustered some words of encouragement. It was a huge relief when we went through mile 20 in 2:15. We could do a 10k in under 45, no sweat, I reassured him.
9. Do you see it?
Trevor had no idea what I was talking about when I asked him if he saw ‘it’? Apparently mile 21 was not the time for vagueness. But I sure saw it. The first place woman and her two guide bikes, not looking altogether chipper, just ahead of us. We had just passed mile 21 and were on Pennsylvania Avenue, just about to start the most grueling climb of the race up Fort Dupont park. Unbeknownst to me, I had been gradually chipping away at her lead ever since we’d passed each other in the out-and-back at mile 15.
I’m not really an uphill runner. I continually let Trevor run ahead on the uphills. He left me for dead sausage on the Calvert hill. So a dogfight between me and the lead woman up the Fort Dupont hill seemed like a losing proposition. Maybe I could just hang behind her for the next five miles and then try to out-kick her at the very end, just like I did last year. But a prolonged dogfight seemed even less appealing.
The Fort Dupont hill is the undoing of many a DC Rock ‘n’ Roll marathoner. My friend Tara is a hill fiend from the mountainous trails of State College, PA, and even she admitted that the size of Fort Dupont did her race in this year. It’s not as steep as the Calvert hill, but it comes at a point in the race when your legs are already fried. And it never seems to end.
Once the lead lady got into the mix, Trevor and I had to run our own races. We kept in loose contact, but Trevor knew that it was Game On and I had to throw down everything I had. I passed the lead woman at mile 22, just at the base of the hill. I kept thinking about MountainBack and all the years I’ve spent splitting my shins up those hills. When we finally had climbed most of the hill, Trevor told me she was 100 yards back. I barely had the strength to acknowledge his words, but I appreciated them very much nonetheless.

After the fact, you can use Strava data to compare the time difference between me and the woman who led the race for most of the way. You can see the turning point around mile 15 and how linear the change was, even after I passed her. Trevor and I ran impossibly even splits (a slight negative split even), showing that the difference between running a bit over 3 and a bit under comes down to pacing.
10. ‘Splash zone‘
I couldn’t help but compare the last miles of the race this year to the previous year. Last year I whipped up Fort Dupont’s hill no problem and flew to the finish with an ease I may never feel again. Last year my last two miles were 6:08 and 6:04. This year, it took all I could muster to drop a 6:28 and a 6:58. And getting down to that 6:28 might have taken a toll. I wanted so much to steam to victory in the last two miles to the finish. I started throwing down hard. And then at mile 25 I threw up, some off to the side, some down the front of my bib. I felt like I’d been hit by a brick. It occurred to me that everything could unravel in the last mile, and I needed to just keep a steady course. I never turn my head to look back in races, but I could sense that Trevor was following not far behind me, and no sign of the formerly lead woman.
Last year I won in the final sprint and had only a fleeting moment of being in the lead. So this year I made sure to savor being the lead woman down the stretch even if my leg turnover was labored. Even though it felt like I was kind of blowing up, my 6:58 final mile wasn’t actually that far off my average pace of 6:47.
At some point Trevor’s wife Kelly jumped in on her bike and paced Trevor through his final miles. At one point she yelled ‘Go Martha!’ But from my end it sounded more like a ‘Martha!’ warning call and a whirled around half-expecting to see the other woman back on my heels.
As tough as that last 0.2 miles is, it’s a thrill to run through the finish area, with spectators howling on both sides. I put a hand up and waved to signal my appreciation. When I crossed the finish line they draped an American flag around my shoulders. But they had to quickly remove it when I started throwing up buckets of fluorescent gatorade. It was a high frequency, high volume vomit. Aaron, who’d had a banner day himself, finishing 8th in 2:45, was impressed by the quantity of liquid being expelled from my stomach.
Typically I get really ill about 20-30 minutes after a race. But this year it was full on puke-and-rally. I gave a bunch of interviews. There were little write-ups in Run Washington and Competitor. The Washington Post sports section had a little blurb. For some reason even though I always mention WUS as my running club it never gets into the article. The reporters also seemed entirely uninterested in the details of my vomit. Whereas last year it was raining and cold and everyone made a beeline out of there, this year we sat around on the grass a while with Trevor and his friends, pilfering the VIP tent and its choice array of drinks and snacks, including a marvelous plate of kettle chips greatly enjoyed by Trevor, whom I can forgive for eating all my chips only because he made my entire race experience delightful even when I was vomiting in my own mouth. Trevor is living proof that environmental influences are entirely over-rated. Trevor floated through the triple-death-combo of St. Albans School for Boys/Princeton (engineering no less)/Finance career without absorbing any of the stereotypes. I’m still trying to wrap my head around this.
Aaron and I had much to celebrate, and met up with Cecily and Ben for brunch at….where else?…Cleveland Park Bar & Grill.
* Reality Check: I recognize that the hype-to-performance ratio at the DC marathon is unusual. Running 2:58 is a quality time for a woman, but but it’s not a time that’s going to win any of the marathons with the prize money to draw real elites. I wasn’t in great fitness, and this wasn’t a particularly great performance. But I was tough mentally. And it’s fun to have a race where normal non-elites like me get to have a little taste of victory on a big stage.
